OVH Dynamics 2009 Results

On june 4th there was a small club competition going on in the Boerhave pool in the Netherlands. The competition was not acknowledge by AIDA because of its closed character. But then again, two team members from the Dutch team who go to the world championships did attend. So it’s interesting to see where they are in training.
Nanja van den Broek made an onofficial dutch national record by doing a 111 meter dynamic without fins. Eric van Riet Paap managed to do a 137 meter dynamic with fins, which is now his personal best. Strange thing is, that he has the dynamic without fins national record with a 153 meters distance. (Eric, how come? not enough training with fins?)

My personal best with (another) monofin is also about 150, in training that is. On the one hand my technique still leaves much to be desired. On the other hand I have only had a few changes in competition to go over the 153 and in both cases I was not in the right shape (mental/physical) to do a good performance. The first time it was the day after my borderline 153 no fins dive with little sleep, the 2nd time it was right after my 8:01 static in Namur last march. This time I was co-organizing the competition and had/took no time to focus prior to the dive.
I was hoping for a longer distance like 160-170 meters this time but to be honest I did not do enough max. attempts in training lately to swim ’till the end. After surfacing I was as hypoxic as after a 5-6 minutes static, so the distance will come one day. I was happy with some confidence-builders. Putting on my fin was a lot less stressful than usual because of the extra time I allocated for it. I hyperventilated less, almost nothing, and the dive was still manageable. This time I did two exhales and full inhales before I started packing. One exhale less and I am where I want to be with this. Smallest possible steps…
Some bad turns did not significantly get me out of my concentration. Relaxation was good during the dive, which for me with the monofin especially is still very important to enjoy swimming with it. I am trying to streamline more in training.
I like swimming with my monofin, which is an improvement over a few months ago. When I start loving it (I had one or two dives like that, I know how it feels
) I feel I can start training for that mythical 200 meter dive.
@ericvrp with amazing results on static and no fins, you will certainly do 200 meters without a doubt after some more training.
