Update On Dimitris Vassilakis

September 10, 2007 in Accident, News by Jorg Jansen

Alexandros Chadiaris shares the details about what happened and the funeral. Thanks for informing us.

Hello Friends,

We are very shocked here in Greece. Yesterday was his funeral. Hundreds of relatives and friends were there. He was buried with his speargun in his hands.

dimitris.jpgJust a few words about the “accident”. Dimi was to go with a friend of his for spearfishing on Saturday. His friend showed up with another friend and the 3 of them went to an island near Dimi’s hometown. The plan was to fish the two of them together, but since they were 3 he left them together and went a little bit further where he dived alone. He was not going to pick them up after some time ,so they went looking for him.

They found the gun at 7 mtrs with a fish a big red grouper (mycteroperca rubra)shoot at 27 and Dimi was at 30 mtrs (he was hunting with waitings only). He blacked out after the shoot during his ascent with the reel open (trying to hold the fish) at 7 meters and afterwards he sank. That’s all the info they collected from the watch. He had done a lot of waitings before the last dive.

OF COURSE IF HE WAS NOT SPEARFISHING ALONE I WOULDN’T HAVE TO SENT THIS MAIL. MAY HIS DEATH BE A LESSON TO ANY OF US WHO GO FOR SPEARFISHNG ALONE.

dimitris1.jpgJust for your info we changed our competition name to:

SUMMER APNEA GAMES 2007
(IN THE MEMORY OF DIMITRIS VASSILAKIS)

Regards (still not believing it)
Alexandros Chadiaris (E Judge)
Greece.

Goodbye Dimitris

dimitris_panos.jpgUnfortunately some very sad news came in about Dimitrix Vassilakis from Greece. Dimitris was found dead underwater after a spearfishing trip. Dimitris was well known within the AIDA community in his role as an AIDA Judge and present at many of the big competition and world championships and world record attempts.

I’ve met Dimitris personally at several competitions in the last years and we had some very good and interesting talks. For sure a highly intelligent and comic person, who will be missed by many! Dimitris, rest in peace…
