Workshop Description
This two-day workshop is primarily designed for physicians interested in breath-hold diving for medical, research, dive training and dive industry participants. Additionally, emergency medical personnel, paramedics, nurses and other non-medical diver related personnel might also find this workshop of value.

Goals and Objectives
The goals of the symposium are to: review the history of breath-hold diving, summarize the current state of knowledge and practice and stimulate new avenues of research.

Through presentations and question and answer sessions with the faculty, it is anticipated that the attendees will:

• Be able to discuss a historical overview of the science of breath-hold diving;

• Have a better understanding of the effects of: nitrogen narcosis, loss of consciousness, acute effects of hypoxia, laryngospasm, splenic responses, and competitive apnea during breath-hold diving;

• Be more informed about the DAN breath-hold diving incident database and be able to discuss safety in breath-hold diving;

• Have enhanced technical information related to breath-hold diving practices from the competitive and military aspects.

• Understand some of the pulmonary aspects of competitive breath-hold diving including glossopharyngeal breathing.

• Be able to describe and discuss clinical problems associated with breath-hold diving.
